Bring awareness to your feelings.
What do you feel? What thoughts rise from the depths?
What do you feel when you look at those hands reaching out? Asking. Hoping. Begging. Please see me. Please feed me. Please fill me. Pleading hands. Hopeful hands. Longing hands. Do you want to know their story? Does compassion burst forth and you want to give? Do you feel repulsed? Do you want to turn away? Do you relate? Does it resonate with a longing within yourself? Have you ever felt poor?
What does enough look like?
Having a large home? An expensive car? Being able to travel? Or being able to buy or do whatever you desire?
Would that be enough?
If that is how we think of “enough” we will never have enough. We will always long for more. We know this is true, but we are caught in a loop of striving for it all anyway. How often do we see someone famous, who seemingly has everything, and yet is not happy with their lives? So, what is missing? Why isn’t it enough?
What does enough feel like?
I have begun looking at “enough” from this perspective. What does enough feel like? What is abundance and what would an abundant fulfilling life feel like to me?
My answers; joy, peace, strength, following my passions, freedom, courage, trying, having love in my life in all its forms, being fully me and living. These are the feelings I equate with a fulfilling life. Basically, creating the life of my dreams. I realized has more to do with how I feel than what I own.
You are likely thinking; sounds great, but money makes it easier. Does it?
Often, I have felt that I did not have enough. You name a thing, talent, etc and I felt I did not have enough. I would try not to compare, but I silently and often unknowingly compared with everyone about about everything. Deep within myself, I felt like a beggar. Poor, marginalized, hungry for more, feeling that my portion was always too small. This is known as scarcity consciousness. It can be the underlying feeling of not having enough money, food, love, etc or the fear that what you have will be taken from you.
It seems this mindset is pervasive in our culture. Which is amazing when we live in houses that are dubbed McMansions, rent storage units for everything that doesn’t fit in our homes, and pack landfills to the point that what we will do with our trash is an ecological issue. Yet, the collective “we” in America is not satisfied. We want more. It isn’t enough.
This type of thinking, rooted in fear, kept me in a dysfunctional co-dependent marriage for much too long. Miserable and neglected. I stayed. Why? Simply because I believed that I could not afford to leave. I was terrified I could not provide for myself, let alone, my 4 children. This mindset kept me from having the courage to create the life I desired. I dreamed of another life, but every day lived the same as the day before. One day the pain of staying became stronger than my fears and I asked for a divorce. Terrified, I took a leap.
…shortly after I saw this posted on Facebook.
I printed it out and posted it on my dream board. I realized in that moment. I had been given a blank slate. I could create a life I loved. That was the beginning of my empowerment. The start of enough. It gave me permission to have a beautiful life. To create. To go for it. To truly live.
Amazingly, as I began to create the life I wanted, I had less, but it felt like enough. Overtime, I became stronger, more confident, and more whole. My life felt full of goodness. And that feeling, was enough.
It has been three years since I asked for my divorce. I have done things I only dreamed of; like traveling to Korea, California and Canada. I have had difficult days and cried many tears, but I have also had more laughter and joy along this rocky road. I am more at peace. I am finding my way and enjoying the adventure. I am becoming more generous. I look for opportunities to give or serve others. The feeling of empowerment created within me a passion to empower others.
Why?
Simply, because I am not afraid anymore. I no longer have a scarcity mindset, so I am not afraid to share and give. I feel supported by the Universe. When we become full, we pour out to others. It is the natural law of overflow. True abundance is found within and cannot be contained.
As I look back over my journey of transformation, I ponder this change of perspective and I think, what if everyone had the courage to follow their inner passion and create the life they desire? What if everyone pursued setting their authentic self free? What if everyone felt empowered? What would that world look like?

“Where we focus our thoughts, our feelings follow. Where our attention goes, our energy flows. If we focus on want, we will find that we do not have enough. If we focus on gratitude, we will discover a life of abundance unfolding before our eyes.”
I have pondered about people who have “a lot” of money and/or power, but are always wanting more, gathering up more, building up more for themselves, often on the backs of other people, and I realized these people also have a scarcity mentality. It has nothing to do with how much we actually own. They feel that what have is not enough. It has become clear to me that they continue to desire more because on the inside, deep down in the depths of their subconscious, they feel poor. They have not found “enough” because the answer to enough, having enough, being enough, is found by going within. It is a courageous and sacred journey one must walk alone, yet along that path, I have found that everyone in my life has been my guides. The Divine is always calling us inward, to discover who we really are, and bring that truth outward. We go in, then bring it out, over and over again…
I believe this: The earth is capable of sustaining and providing for everyone on the planet. Humanity is capable of solving the problems that face us today; poverty, equality for all, education, healthcare, global warming, etc. We have the knowledge, technology, imagination, creativity and compassion to do so. We look at these problems and think they are too big, they will never be solved. We feel poor and unable. We often feel scarcity ourselves, living from paycheck to paycheck trying to keep up with the Joneses. What would happen, if slowly, one by one, we became empowered? If one by one we began changing how see “enough”? Ghandi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Jim Palmer says (and I am paraphrasing) People ask why God allows awful things to happen, I would ask, why do we?
If you want to be the change, first you have to believe you can be the change. If your feel like the picture at the top of this post on the inside. If you do not believe you are smart enough, powerful enough, rich enough, talented enough, creative enough to design your own life, how can you believe you can change the world? It starts within….
My journey out of scarcity consciousness is not complete and it has not changed my finances drastically, but it has changed my inner landscape and my outer landscape is transforming as a result. It has been the best trip I have ever taken…I hope you will join me.
