“I am” is a powerful concept. I am a massage therapist. I am a mother. I am a sister. I am a friend. I am…..[Fill in the Blank]. We say, I am…..this or that more often then we are aware of and that is just out of our mouths. What about the “I am” in our brain? I am too out of shape. I am tired. I am not attractive. I am [Fill in the Blank].
… we write our own story.
Remember those fun story pages where you filled in the blank to create a story? Is that really any different than our lives? We decide who we are. We can change the narrative. We can decide who “I am” is. You can choose to be the heroine of your story…this is YOUR life.
“My life just stopped, the only story I heard was the ones I kept telling myself. The one where I was the…”Evil Queen”.
Until I remembered the most important thing, my life was never just one story. It was many stories. To some a villain. I hurt them in ways I can never make up for. To others a hero. They see my strength. My ability to do the hard things even when I thought I couldn’t.
I want to start a new story. One where the “Evil Queen” doesn’t get a part. And I can choose to believe that this story will have a better ending than my last.” — Regina, the Evil Queen, Once Upon A Time
I am a victim
I was often told that I was weak growing up. That was my inner narrative. During my twenty year marriage, I wanted to leave many times. I thought about leaving for 15 years. “I am weak”. Stopped me. I was afraid that I would not be able to survive financially. I had four children. I had stayed at home to raise them. I could not easily get a new job that would support us, my massage work was only supplemental income. I am too afraid. I am weak. I am unable. I am a victim…and what I told myself I was, I was.
Thankfully, one day, the pain of staying became greater than my fear of leaving. When I decided that “I will have to be strong enough”, the Universe sent the perfect person into my life. A powerfully strong woman, who could see in me what I couldn’t. Strength. Through her eyes and words, I began to see myself as she did and I began to believe, “I am strong”. As I embraced this new belief, my world began to change. I began to change, or better said, I began being who I already was, but didn’t know.
Starting over…
I often described it as being at the bottom of a dark pit that I didn’t know how to get out of. I was angry because the pit was made by my ex and myself, but I was the one left with the responsibility of cleaning up the mess. I had the responsibility of all four children 24/7, I had the responsibility of the house, I was the one who seemed to be concerned for the financial state we were left with, and I was the one who had to build a business. It was overwhelming. I am the victim, I thought, and in my hurt and devastated state, I let people know it, even my children.
Thankfully, I also felt free, happy, alive and excited for the first time in at least a decade. I felt I had been given a blank slate. I began to have hope. I began to realize, I had given myself a second chance and this time, I could design the life I desired. I could choose better, I could choose me. So, I started asking myself, who am I? What do I really want? What is important to me. What do I want to impart to my children? How do I want them to see me? and with that….I began to do the work. My inner journey set before me, the untangling began. I began to dream and set intentions, I began to heal and send seeds of hope into the air…

“Maybe the journey isn’t about becoming anything. Maybe it is about un-becoming everything that isn’t really you, so you can become who you were meant to be in the first place.” — Heather Rasche
I am Powerful
As I began stand on my own two feet, I felt wobbly, like a young foal taking it’s first steps. Each day circumstances came that would challenge me, make me cry, expose my fears and over time make me strong. I started to see myself differently. One evening on the way home from my son’s football game the Divine spoke to me powerfully, it was my lowest point during the process of my separation, my fear was at it’s highest point. The Harvest moon shown brightly as I drove and I clearly heard within my mind, “he was not your provider, he was my conduit, now you will see Me provide for you directly”. In that instant, I felt peace blanket and calm my fear. I knew I was going to be okay. Of course, that was challenged over time, but I choose to believe; I am strong, I am safe, I am love, I am abundant, I am thankful and with each day these new ‘I am”s took root.
It has been a long journey. A wonderful journey with no destination, a journey without end. It is about exploring and setting myself free. It has been about me seeing that no matter what happens, I am strong enough to face it. I am strong enough to rise and to keep rising. I am strong enough to help another person up. I am strong enough to really live. I chose living over an empty facade of a life.
What are your “I am”s? What is your self talk? What do you want for your life? It is about living! Freedom! Empowerment! Expressing your inner self and releasing and becoming your highest self! This is where a fulfilling life begins….
