Wild Self

"My wild spirit is my deepest truth, my greatest expression and my highest love."

“The wild winds called to her soul and through the ground she felt the thundering hooves of freedom.” Shikoba

Do you feel it?
The Wild One within?
The part of you that longs for freedom?

Each of us possesses a Wild Self. Read that again. Now say it out loud: “I have a Wild Self.” What feelings and thoughts arise? Do you know your Wild Self?

As Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., discusses in “Women Who Run With the Wolves,” the Wild Self embodies our untamed, instinctual nature—especially as it relates to women. Carl Jung refers to this essence as the Wild Woman archetype, encompassing the deep, instinctual parts of our psyche that society often suppresses.

This concept highlights the importance of reconnecting with our true Selves, fostering authenticity, creativity, and empowerment. The Wild Self is tied to intuition, emotional depth, and an unrestrained spirit that celebrates individuality and the natural world. It urges us to embrace our instincts and the wildness within, which is essential for personal growth and self-discovery.

You may wonder: how do I connect with this part of myself? How will I recognize and discern it? Clarissa Pinkola Estes advises us to “look for the indestructible life force, the bones.”

Many of us, guided by intuition, have been unconsciously seeking our bones.

We possess an innate desire to live authentically, guided by our unique blueprint. I’ve experienced this myself. From the outside, it may appear that I’m lost and wandering, and at times, I’ve certainly felt that way. Yet through it all, I have been guided by my inner knowing, sometimes listening closely, sometimes ignoring it, but over time learning to honor and trust it for it has led me Home to Self.

It requires courage to embark on this journey. Courage is one of the keys to ascending to the higher frequency states of being that our Self resonates at. If you want to elevate your life, you must choose courage and love. To pursue your Wild Self necessitates deconstructing belief systems and societal norms. It calls for surrender and letting go. It also invites us to create.

As women, we often fear our Wild Self because it embodies our raw, potent power and has been vilified. Unlike men, we aren’t typically taught how to access this power. Instead, we often find ourselves in systems that encourage us to defer our power, and when we do dare to wield it, we may be labeled as a bitch, Jezebel or Witch.

What emotions arise when you hear those words? What memories pop up?

Sadly, when women step into their power, they are frequently judged and labeled in attempts to keep them “in their place”. We can be called “witch” for our intelligence, ambition, sexuality, passions or purpose.

Reflection: Do you carry wounding around your power? Can you recall a moment when you were scolded for being your Wild Self? How many times have you made yourself small to fit in or shut down?

Each time we diminish ourselves or choose to defer our power, we fracture a part of our Wild Self, leaving it hidden in the dark recesses of our psyche and body. Within those shadows lie the bones we left behind—carriers of the stories and remembrances essential to reclaiming our authentic Wild Self. These bones connect us to our power, purpose, and ability to create the life we yearn to experience.

What is your Wild Self craving?

What inner urgencies stir within you?

“Ask her what she craved, and she’d get a little frantic about things like books, the woods, music, plants and the seasons. Also freedom. Not being bought and sold by some idiot employer, not having the moments of her days valued in fractions of a dollar by somebody other than herself.” — Charles Frazier

What calls to you in the quiet when you’re alone?

When was the last time you truly felt alive?

“My wild spirit is my deepest truth, my greatest expression, and my highest love. It cannot be contained. It defies rules and explanations and logic. I embrace my untamed spirit and unleash her into a world meant to be filled with joy, love, and laughter. I feel the wind in my hair, lift my gaze to the sky, raise my arms, and invite the thunder. I remember what it feels like to be exposed and wildly alive.” — Adrienne Enns

So, how do we find our Wild Self? Clarissa Pinkola Estes suggests that we first “look for the indestructible life force.” We must call up the buried pieces of our wild soul and sing them back into a vital shape. To sing means to use our soul’s voice—breathing truth into our power and needs, enveloping it in love until our relationship with the Wild Self overflows. “That is singing over the bones.”

This process involves going within with the mind of an archeologist—finding the bones, loving them, and restoring them. It serves as a metaphor for building a relationship with ourselves, honoring our truths, and courageously expressing them to the world. It harmonizes our inner and outer realms.

This journey toward loving and embracing your Wild Self is lifelong, exploring the cycles of nature—life, living, and renewal again and again. Like the beating of a drum, what is your life’s rhythm and pattern?

If you’re like me, you might want to rush to the end, like a rabbit scurrying along. But remember, this journey is more akin to that of the tortoise. We are meant to savor the moments, stop to smell the roses, and appreciate the expansive views. This lifelong practice rewards us with Wild Wisdom that nourishes our souls.
