“No one can tell what goes on in between the person you were and the pweaon you become. No one can chart that blue and lonely section of hell. There are no maps of the change. You just come out the other side. Or you don’t.” Stephen King, The Stand
Transformation
When we see a butterfly we may be reminded of transformation; beauty, freedom, flight, or becoming the fullness we were meant to be. It is easy to look at the final stage and desire it. We also, do not mind considering its beginning, the cute vulnerable caterpillar, slowly making it’s way through life nibbling on a leaf, seeminly fine until one day it feels strange, it senses change and goes within a cocoon. But, we don’t like to contemplate about what happens in the cocoon; the darkness, the slow churning of its DNA, the murky, oozing painful mess that is the undoing and distruction of the caterpillar. We gloss over that part of transformation. The path and experience of transformation is as unique as each person who bravely chooses metamorphosis, letting go of what once was to create something new, better, more authentic. Somehow out the darkness of that unseen mystery, materializes a butterfly. All that transpired within the cocoon of change is now worthwhile when we discover our beautiful wings and take flight. It is a perfect metaphor for transformation.
The following are some truths I have discovered along my personal road to change. These have become helpful wise guides that keep transforming and lifting me higher. You can revolutionize your life by implementing these three “simple” practices. Although they are not difficult, they take work to implement and must be practiced to become skillful. The truth is, we never arrive, we are created to desire more, to grow, to change, to expand and to transform.
- Radical Self Love
- Radical Honesty with yourself and others at all times. Loving yourself means being honest about who you are, what you want, what you believe, what you think and how you feel.
- Radical Commitment to yourself. Loving yourself means that if you say you are going to start; eating healthy, taking better care of yourself, walking, spend less time on social media, quit that job you hate, end that going no where relationship, etc, that you actually do it. Follow through for yourself! Love yourself enough to start one new habit, then once it is established, choose another . Commit to feeling better.
- Radical Responsibility for your life. Loving yourself means that you do not give your power away to others, you call it back by taking radical responsibility for your life. You create the life you desire, one that feels good to you, take responsibility for where your life is at today and plot a course for change if or where needed. Your life is your responsibility.
- Radically Invest in yourself, put your time and money into you becoming healthy and whole. You cannot give out of an empty bucket. If you are depleted; please fill yourself up.
- Tune into YOUR Internal GPS
- You have an internal guidance system that knows what is best for you. Listen to it.
- Your Body is a gift, a temple and guidance system. It knows when something isn’t right. You will feel it. Take time to tune in and listen to it’s guidance. With practice you will learn to heed it’s nuanced messages. It will help you keep mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually healthy.
- Have fun and feel good! We are created to feel good. Use feeling good as a guide. Do things that make you feel at peace, well, prosperous; be in nature, sleep, rest, create, dance, sing, be goofy, love, laugh and be you. Notice when you feel uneasy, stressed, tired, restless, empty, hungry, thirsty, sad or lonely. Listen to your body do not ignore it’s messages. Ddo something about it! Our body, emotions, mind and senses were created to give us messages that would help us find balance, homeostasis, which feels good to us. Our nature will lead us toward feeling good, so practice and learn to use your inner guidance system.
- Stop Accepting Mediocrity
- When we become comfortable and accept mediocrity we are selling ourselves short and in time will become discontent and possibly filled with resentment or regret. I don’t believe that any of us desire to experience a mediocre life. Now, what mediocre means is subjective, but I believe deep within is the desire to live life to our fullest ability, so STOP accepting less from yourself.
- Stop accepting medioctrity from others. You teach people how to treat you. If you do not like how others treat you, change what you will accept. Expect more from others. If one person changes the steps of the dance, the other person cannot stay the same. Change the dance. You can choose what you kind of treatment will accept.
- NO LIMITS! There are unlimited possibilities, so stop putting limits on yourself or on your dreams. Gather information. Ask for help and take steps toward your goals. Set small acheivable goals and celebrate your successes. Step by step walk toward your dreams. Your dreams may transform as you do and that is okay, but do not limit yourself. Go for the life you truly desire and more importantly, be your beautiful authentic self.
If we aren’t fully loving ourselves or enjoying our lives, then it is likely a sign that change is needed.
